(I’m hoping that it has a “Subtitles OFF” feature so that I can focus on the Latin and Aramaic without being distracted by the English subtitles. Can’t wait to see if it does. 🙂

Author: Jimmy Akin

Jimmy was born in Texas, grew up nominally Protestant, but at age 20 experienced a profound conversion to Christ. Planning on becoming a Protestant seminary professor, he started an intensive study of the Bible. But the more he immersed himself in Scripture the more he found to support the Catholic faith, and in 1992 he entered the Catholic Church. His conversion story, "A Triumph and a Tragedy," is published in Surprised by Truth. Besides being an author, Jimmy is the Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers, a contributing editor to Catholic Answers Magazine, and a weekly guest on "Catholic Answers Live."

  1. “I’m hoping that it has a “Subtitles OFF”
    feature”
My understanding is that it’s a bare-bones, featureless DVD.

  2. The subtitles are almost certainly removable. The DVD format notes say “closed-captioned,” which means that the subtitles are not a hard part of the image. Even if there’s no language menu, which there probably is, you’ll still be able to hit the subtitles button on your remote and turn them off.
P.S. IMDb.com’s weekly DVD column reports a “special edition” with features is expected to follow. No word on when.
P.P.S. I just posted a new Passion article at DecentFilms.

  3. Steven,
Thanks for your terrific review in this morning’s Catholic Exchange. I wasn’t aware of the St. Faustina reference in the film’s depiction of Christ being pierced by a sword.

  4. I have just popped the disc into my DVD player and can confirm that the European (Region 2) version definitely has a “subtitles-off” feature. I’m sure that the American (Region 1) version will too.

  5. You ougth to get Catholic Answers to buy a lot of these and sell them…I’d pay an extra dollar or so if I knew it was going to a good cause!!!

Thanks, Rich. I think most people missed that one the first time — including me! It was my wife Suzanne who first spotted it, though as soon as she pointed it out to me I realized she was right. (BTW, the version of the article on DecentFilms is slightly expanded and enhanced relative to the version on CatholicExchange. I’m an inveterate tinkerer of my work.)

How about buying it via Decent Films links to Amazon.com??? I’m a reasonably good cause! 😀

  7. DO NOT BUY FROM AMAZON. DO NOT BUY FROM AMAZON!!
    THEY CHARGED $17.99 (NO TAX)
My nearest WalMart charge 15.SomethingCents and with Orange County 7.75% tax it comes out to $16.36 which is cheapere than Amazon PLUS if you orderedfrom amazon now they would shipped it on Sept 7, add that to the delivery time than it would take sometime to get the DVD.
Sorry to burst the Buble Jimmy :). But I got tricked by amazon and luckily I’m able to cancelled my order and bought the DVD from WalMart.
