Raiders Of The Lost Sun Temple

Suntemple

A large sun temple of the Egyptian pharaohs has been dug up under an outdoor market in Cairo:

"The partially uncovered site is the largest sun temple ever found in the capital’s Aim Shams and Matariya districts, where the ancient city of Heliopolis — the center of pharaonic sun worship — was located, Zahi Hawass told The Associated Press.

"Among the artifacts was a pink granite statue weighing 4 to 5 tons whose features ‘resemble those of Ramses II,’ said Hawass, head of the Supreme Council of Antiquities."

GET THE STORY.

<tongue in cheek>

Don’t these archaeologists remember what is commonly believed to have happened to the raiders of King Tut’s tomb?  Not to mention to the Raiders of the Lost Ark.

JIMMY ADDS: It’s always nice to hear from our old friend Zahi Hawass. Nice to know he’s keeping busy.

Author: Jimmy Akin

Jimmy was born in Texas, grew up nominally Protestant, but at age 20 experienced a profound conversion to Christ. Planning on becoming a Protestant seminary professor, he started an intensive study of the Bible. But the more he immersed himself in Scripture the more he found to support the Catholic faith, and in 1992 he entered the Catholic Church. His conversion story, "A Triumph and a Tragedy," is published in Surprised by Truth. Besides being an author, Jimmy is the Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers, a contributing editor to Catholic Answers Magazine, and a weekly guest on "Catholic Answers Live."

  1. No offense to Jimmy, but Zahi Hawass is a publicity whore. 🙂 I can’t stand that guy!
In any case, I was very excited to hear about this new discovery. Heliopolis was a very important cult center in Egypt. As Cairo was built over it, the only ancient relics (that I am aware of) left of Heliopolis is one lone obelisk. So yay!
For more on Heliopolis role as a cult center in Egypt, may I recommend an article that I wrote? “the Ennead of Heliopolis”
Note to Shell: Abu Simbel (the temple in your picture) isn’t in Cairo. *Clears throat* Okay, I’ll shut up now!

  2. They had better watch out that they don’t open some “tomb” and awaken a Goa’uld from stasis. Or accidently activate a Naquadah generator and overload it.

  3. Ah, April, annoyance is only the first phase of Extended Zahi Exposure. Eventually you will come to love his ubiquity, much as Egyptologists grudgingly admire Ramesses II’s ability to chisel his name and face on every vertical surface between Ethiopia and Syria.
Plus, I do a really good Zahi impersonation. If he were to go away, I’d be the Vaughn Meader of Egyptology nerds.

  4. Mr. Walsh,
Oh no, I am a big Egyptophile (check out my site at http://www.egyptianmyths.net, just to give an example of how crazy I am), I have been on Hawass overload for 10 years now. I would have said something more colorful about Hawass, but this is a family website. 🙂

    My comment was tongue-in-cheek.
