The Italian Fashion Industry Gets Religion!

Alquds_jeansNot ours. Not the traditional Italian one. But religion, nevertheless.

An Italian clothing company has now designed jeans specially designed for Muslims.

This is NOT a joke. It’s real.

The jeans are designed to make Muslims more comfortable when doing their daily prayers.

In a flash of inter-religious sensitivity, the company has named the line "al-Quds" jeans, which in Arabic means "Jerusalem" jeans.

That’s sure to please Hamas and the PLO.

It’ll probably be a bit less popular with our Jewish friends.

It’s also weird because, if the jeans are meant to make Muslims more comfortable when they pray and you want to name them after a city then you’d think the designer would want to name them after the city toward which Muslims pray: Mecca.

In that case they ought to be called "al-Makkah" jeans.

Oops!

Maybe naming jeans after someone’s main holy city would be religiously insensitive or something . . . even a provocation and a desecration.

Now why is my Spidey sense for double standards tingling?

GET THE STORY.

Y’know, I have this horrible feeling that Ann Coulter is going suggest an advertising slogan along the lines of "Al-Quds! The perfect jeans to go with your new suicide belt!"

But that would be wrong. For all the obvious reasons.

  1. What would be great is if Catholics over there (few that still live there, anyways) bought them up and started using them for the same reason. Then maybe we’d get some with royal purple or Marian blue stitching, maybe a rosary clasp where the hammer loop would normally go.
Hey, there’s a market in this religious stuff.

  2. Naming them after Jerusalem is perfect, because Islam’s holy city originally was Jerusalem, and it was only changed after the Jews proved unwilling to convert en masse (archaeology suggests this was at least a century after the life and death of the historical Muhammad, to whom this change had been attributed). Early mosques were all constructed oriented towards Jerusalem, not Mecca.

  3. I don’t know why everyone feels the need to mock Muslims just because they want to wear clothes which edify them in their religious faith. Plenty of Catholics wear clothes with Catholic themes (t-shirts with images of Our Lady on them and the like) and yet I have a feeling that some people on this website would be rather indignant if a website devoted an article to making fun of them. I know I would, even though I don’t wear those things myself.

  4. What Chris 2-4 said. We’re mocking the fashion industry and the religion of political correctness gone amok. That’s about as different from mocking Muslims as anything I can think of at the moment.

  5. Chris-2-4, SDG:
yes, I realise that having read the posts again. Sorry, sometimes I’m a little hasty in shouting things down (a very rare trait in conservative/traditionalist Catholics, as you are all aware!)

  6. I did mean to mock Muslim historiography, however.
No Muslims were harmed in the production of this mockery, though.

  7. Don’t suppose they have a women’s line…
I read yesterday, can’t remember where, that a clothing company (maybe the same one mentioned here) has designed a volleyball uniform which enables Moslem girls to play the sport without their sleeves, veils etc getting in the way. From the look of the uniform it could be used for most sports – except swimming! lol
