A Lemonade Per Day…

… may keep the kidney stones away. Or so says recent research.

"Regular consumption of the refreshing drink — or even lemon juice mixed with water — may increase the production of urinary citrate, a chemical in the urine that prevents the formation of crystals that may build up into kidney stones.

"So conclude two studies presented Tuesday at the American Urological Association annual meeting in Atlanta."

GET THE STORY.

<Tongue in cheek> Just you watch. If this theory gains traction, the next thing you know the Food and Drug Administration will close down kiddie lemonade stands for prescribing medicine without a license. </tongue in cheek>

  1. A lot of them are already being shut down by home-owners associations for violating property covenants which prohibit commercial activity in the development, or by municipalities because the tykes failed to apply for the proper licensing and health department permits.

  2. My daughter will be glad to hear about this.
    She LOOOVES lemonade.
    Fresh squeezed is terriffic!

  3. I wonder if you have to drink lemonade to get this effect, or if any source of vitamin C would have the same benefits?

  4. “Even a lemonade stand in Anytown, CA technically requires a business license, a visit from health inspectors, and a permit from the planning commission before it opens.” (Nov. 18, 2004)
From Manhattan Beach (May 2001), up the coast a bit from Jimmy:

Manhattan Beach police shut down a children’s lemonade stand at the corner of Harkness and 3rd Streets Sunday after repeated complaints from neighbors. The reason: the kids were soliciting sales without a city permit.
One neighbor who witnessed the incident, James Combs, said he was surprised the police would devote tine and energy to closing down a lemonade stand when they could be chasing speeders and cars that run stop signs in the neighborhood.
“Maybe the kids didn’t have a business license, or maybe they were stealing customers from the open house up the street,” Combs said.
Police Chief Ernie Klevesahl defended his officer’s actions.
“We don’t go out looking to close down lemonade stands,” Klevesahl said Tuesday. “If we don’t get complaints, then we leave it alone. But if someone complains, then we have to respond.”
Klevesahl said the incident began Saturday afternoon, when the police received a complaining call about the lemonade stand.
“When my officers got there, the kids were in the process of closing it down,” Klevesahl said. “Then on Sunday we got another complaint, saying the lemonade stand was a traffic hazard.”
The responding officers determined that the children were soliciting sales without a city permit, and spoke to their parents, who said they were going to shut it down anyway.
“The kids and their parents were totally cooperative, and there were no citations issued,” Klevesahl said.

  5. As a 17-year police veteran, I’ve had a lot of similar calls, Old Zhou. Whether it’s kids with lemonade stands, kids playing touch football in the street, etc. Once, I got a complaint that kids were shooting baskets on the playgound of an elementary school on a Saturday afternoon. Nearly all of these complaints were anonymous. (If they weren’t, my lieutenant would probably be getting complaints about me, that I asked the complainant, “So what’s the problem?” and, “Would you rather they were smoking dope or vandalizing cars?”). Most of these types of complaints can be summarized as: “There are kids having fun. Please send an officer to put a stop to it.” Just think how miserable it must be to be that kind of person.

  6. I think I go to church with those people (the anonymous callers.) I can imagine this stuff happening the way I get sneered at and scolded for having a two year old (I don’t even sit in or near the pews…)

  7. DJ, just remember the words of Bishop Sheen regarding young children and the noise they make in Church: “Little Children have their own way of praising God.”

  8. Daily, our bodies take in toxins and pollutants such as pesticides, preservatives and other compound contaminates from the processed foods we eat as part of our unhealthful dietary habits. Our bodies have self cleansing systems which continually work hard to eliminate all the toxins and metabolic wastes that they can. However, even in the best case scenarios of healthy systems, if we put in more toxins at faster rates than our bodies can dispose of, we get backed up as more and more blockages occur. This does not only retard the weight loss process, but it also leads to the development of many health issues.
