JIMMY AKIN PODCAST EPISODE 003 (7/9/11)

ERIC ASKS ABOUT COLONIZING SPACE

* What if space colonizers can’t bring priests with them? What are the faithful to do?

* Could a space bishop function in communion with Rome if there is little or no contact with Rome (or just really really long delays in messages sent back and forth)?

* What if there is limited or no possibility to produce bread and wine?

* Mass in zero-G?

* How would the liturgical calendar square with days and years of varying length? What about differences in how colonizers experience time due to relativity?

PAUL FROM HAWAII ASKS ABOUT PETER AND THE PAPACY

  * What is the evidence Peter died at Rome?

  * What is the evidence for an “unbroken” line of popes?

VERSES MENTIONED IN THIS SEGMENT: John 21:18-19, 1 Peter 5:13, 2 Peter 13-15, Revelation 17:1-18, 18:20

His conversion story, "A Triumph and a Tragedy," is published in Surprised by Truth. Besides being an author, Jimmy is the Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers, a contributing editor to Catholic Answers Magazine, and a weekly guest on "Catholic Answers Live."

  1. Aren’t most of the space questions also relevant to possible scenarios on Earth some of which pretty much like that in the past, though of course the circumstances having to do with messages reaching and the passage of time just become longer?

  2. Thanks for indulging my question Jimmy. That was excellent!
    I really enjoy these podcasts. It’s great to hear you tackle a question with such depth that would be impossible to do on Catholic Answers Live. Keep up the good work.

  3. Zero-G consecration of the Precious Blood would not be too hard: turn the chalice upside-down on the table with a lid on the bottom or use a sealed chalice with a slight hole in which to introduce the wine or just give the chalice a lid or spin the table to induce centripetal force. To dispense, use a straw. Not as related to Passover, but since space travel is a kind of Passover, it might be not too bad.
    The Chicken

  4. Wow. That was a very detailed speculation about space Catholicism. It is a neat thing to contemplate, but I myself seriously doubt any kind of space colonization will ever happen. Space is just way too hostile to human life, and the distances too vast.
