King Of The Box Office

King Kong may have thrashed Aslan in a Google Fight, but at the box office, where it really counts, Aslan proves that he remains the King of the Beasts:

"The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe snatched the box office crown from King Kong during another fierce four-day holiday battle for the top spot.

"Old acquaintances met again: Less than $2 million has separated Kong and Narnia the past two weekends.

"’We edged out Kong. It’s been neck-and-neck,’" Buena Vista’s Dennis Rice said Monday. "’These are two great movies in the marketplace that are doing great business.’"

"Narnia took in an estimated $32.8 million during the Friday-through-Monday period, nudging Universal’s King Kong out of the No. 1 spot and into second with a New Year’s weekend take of $31.6 million."

  1. Yeah!!!! What a great film and story it is — it would be nice if the Hollywood studios got the message that Christian values, or even just good values, will get people to the movies in big numbers.
I hope ASLAN stays at the top for a long while.
Unfortunately soon comes “The Da Vinci Code” nightmare. 🙁

  2. Barbara Nicolosi says King Kong is truly awful, and gives it “two opposable thumbs way down”.
I haven’t seen either film, yet.

  3. Terrible? Nah.
Both are enjoyable but flawed films with very different strengths and weaknesses. LWW had much better source material, but is unevenly adapted. KK is a pulp tribute to pulp source material, though at times it veers from what makes for good escapist entertainment.
Both films make poor characterization choices with major characters (neither Jack Black’s character nor Peter Pevensie is what their respective films needed).
I rated both films B-plus, and I’m not surprised they’ve been running neck and neck at the box office for three weeks running (though being a much bigger fan of the source material for LWW than KK I’m as pleased as anyone to see LWW edge ahead this weekend.

  4. I think that the families have made the difference in the box office. The LWW is a better bet for taking the children than KK is. And as an aside, I think my youngest nephew may very well have a crush on Lucy – the actress was absolutely charming.
