Fr. Stephanos Pedrano Is A Scalawag!

He didn’t tell me that

HE HAS A BLOG!

He’s using it to archive his homilies, so if you want some good homily action, be sure to check it out! (Maybe in time he’ll share some of the rest of his wisdom with us, also.)

As for you, Father, please say one Our Father and one Hail Mary for not letting me know about your blog sooner!

Author: Jimmy Akin

Jimmy was born in Texas, grew up nominally Protestant, but at age 20 experienced a profound conversion to Christ. Planning on becoming a Protestant seminary professor, he started an intensive study of the Bible. But the more he immersed himself in Scripture the more he found to support the Catholic faith, and in 1992 he entered the Catholic Church. His conversion story, "A Triumph and a Tragedy," is published in Surprised by Truth. Besides being an author, Jimmy is the Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers, a contributing editor to Catholic Answers Magazine, and a weekly guest on "Catholic Answers Live."

  1. Well, Jimmy … anyone who posts a comment on your blog receives an implict request to enter his URL. I’ve been complying with that request ever since I set up my blog (last Sunday) by entering the URL of my blog. So, I have been implicitly informing you of my blog all along.
By the way, I’ve added a link to your blog on my blog, designating your blog as “Good Reasons from Jimmy Akin”.
I will now have to find a way to include the word “scalawag” in some homily.

  2. A scalawag was a Southerner that sided with the Yanks.
Them’s fightin’ words, Jimmy!… you rapscallion.

  3. Hold on there, Padre! This Dominican is a native Mississippian…if you can get more southern, I don’t know how.
Good luck with the blog. I suggest you moderate comments, if you’re not already. I had problems with anti-Catholic weasels putting porn links in my comboxes!

  4. Crap, wrong article. What in the world is going on with Typepad. First, I couldn’t click on the field to correct my HTML without GOING to the site I was trying to link to, and now… nevermind. This isn’t the first time Typepad has made a comments field clickable and impossible to edit!

Fr. Philip, according to the dictionary you have to BE a Southerner first in order to be a scalawag.
I was born in the Southern Philippines, farther south than Mississippi.
Thanks for the heads-up about moderating the comboxes. I’ll look into it.

  6. Actually, I was using the term “scalawag” in its earlier historical sense of “scamp”, which was around before the meaning that emerged after The Late Unpleasantness.
a native Mississippian…if you can get more southern, I don’t know how.
You could be born in Corpus Christi, in the point of Texas.

  7. With all due respect to Father Powell–and I say that/this will all the sincerity that an orthodox and practicing Catholic could possibly muster–Father, please know this: “The Yankees”–the baseball team or those of us north of the Mason-Dixon Line–quite frankly, just can’t be beat. It is just that simple, “Tex.” 🙂
“And the Yankees WIN!” Deal with it! 🙂

  8. “‘The Yankees’–the baseball team or those of us north of the Mason-Dixon Line–quite frankly, just can’t be beat. It is just that simple, ‘Tex.'”
Hmmmmmm…interesting, but untrue. How do I know? I’ve asked the thousands upon thousands of Yankees (the people not the team) who move to Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, and Miami every year to get away from the North.
Now, I would gladly move to Boston or NYC for the weather. As a (ahem) larger friar I do not care for my native region’s hot, humid climate. It was 82 in Dallas on Christmas Day! That’s just wrong, wrong, wrong.

Oh, and as for the War of North Aggression…we let y’all win. Just being polite. 😉

It sounds to me like a scalawag was to a good Southerner after the Civil War what a Herodian was to a devout Jew in the time of Jesus.

    I paraphrase Luke 13:29:
“And men will come from east and west, and from north and south, and sit at ‘Corpus Christi’ table in the kingdom of God”
