Cockroach Eating Contest Bugs PETA

It bugs me, too–though I suspect not for the same reason it bugs PETA.

GET THE STORY.

Author: Jimmy Akin

Jimmy was born in Texas, grew up nominally Protestant, but at age 20 experienced a profound conversion to Christ. Planning on becoming a Protestant seminary professor, he started an intensive study of the Bible. But the more he immersed himself in Scripture the more he found to support the Catholic faith, and in 1992 he entered the Catholic Church. His conversion story, "A Triumph and a Tragedy," is published in Surprised by Truth. Besides being an author, Jimmy is the Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers, a contributing editor to Catholic Answers Magazine, and a weekly guest on "Catholic Answers Live."

  1. Hopefully it will be on tape, in case any of these idiots ever decides to run for public office.

  2. Were they live or chocolate-covered? From the look on a couple of those fella’s faces, I’m guessing live.
Either way . . . gives me the hee-bees. I, myself, am not too keen on eating 6 or 8 legged critters.
I have a friend who recently did, though. Chocolate-covered cockroach. Said it was cruncy. Darn waste of cacao, if’n you ask me.

  3. Just to break the unanimity so far – I’d eat one for some free stuff. You can look smart from the back of the line ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. This seems pretty tame compared to some of the antics that many guys in college get involved in. Disgusting, juvenile, offensive and dangerous behavior is de rigueur for many the college-aged man. It’s funny that PETA gets so worked up over cockroaches with all of the horrible stuff that goes on in the world. I’m sure they are only working to protect life in all its forms. Except unborn human beings, of course. That’s only for right-wing kooks.

  5. You know……
Cockroaches are not Kosher… NO REALLY!!!
Only certain kinds of grasshoppers and locusts are kosher. Ref: John the Baptist eating locusts and wild honey. Incidentely honey is kosher but bees are not. (Something about bees making the honey, not that honey is made from bees. But then there is the thing that honey is considered to be bee vomit and not bee you know what else..)
    …I know. I’m rambling…..

  6. Ok… that’s just disgusting. Sadly, however, I’m not surprised that PETA would get involved. I’m a little surprised that they’re not busier with something else though!

  7. I find it interesting that the PETA think that there should be laws banning humans from eating cockroaches, and yet they find it perfectly acceptable for a pack of wolves to gang up on a deer and tear its throat out.
So the view of the PETA is:
Canis Lupis eating animals = GOOD!
Homo Sapiens eating animals = teh EVIL!!!!!11!!!\\!!

  8. Whew! I’ll be glad when that is not at the top of the screen any more. It gives me that same hideous feeling I used to get when my brother would spit from the top bunk and try to aim for brother #2’s mouth who was hanging sideways off the bottom bunk.

  9. When I was at Purdue, there was a entomology class where the professor would “serve ’em up” at one of the last classes. Josh’s comment reminds me that the “Nude Olympics” were in January…

  10. That IS disgusting. Everyone knows they’re much better fried in butter or mashed and spread on crackers. Some people’s children!
    Gotta go. It’s almost lunchtime.

  11. Pretty much disgusts me…
But as a reputable dog breeder who shows, rescues, and places puppies in good homes on contract they be spayed/neutered and returned TO ME if things do not work out… well I am still the enemy to a lot of PETA folks. BAD me for promoting canine companionship and domesticating

We at PETA very much love the animal companions who share our homes, but we believe that it would have been in the animals’ best interests if the institution of “pet keeping”โ€”i.e., breeding animals to be kept and regarded as “pets”โ€”never existed. The international pastime of domesticating animals has created an overpopulation crisis; as a result, millions of unwanted animals are destroyed every year as “surplus.” This selfish desire to possess animals and receive love from them causes immeasurable suffering, which results from manipulating their breeding, selling or giving them away casually, and depriving them of the opportunity to engage in their natural behavior. Their lives are restricted to human homes where they must obey commands and can only eat, drink, and even urinate when humans allow them to.
I guess it is better when they are out in nature killing things, getting diseases, and living unsheltered… (Mine sleep on my bed when I am at work, hardly seems fair!)
So, if it annoys PETA, can’t be all bad!

  12. A friend of mine visited Bangkok a few years ago…apparently street vendors there sell deep-fried cockroaches. (She didn’t try them.) But I saw this elsewhere: these are LIVE Madagascar hissing cockroaches, so they are HUGE and they’re ALIVE and they’re WIGGLY…
EEEEEEUUUUUWWWWWW! You could not pay me enough to eat ONE. Not even one LEG of one!
And as for my cats’ “immeasurable suffering”, they get dry food, occasional wet food, treats after their weekly nail clipping (I didn’t even declaw them because they were both adults when I adopted them), and I scoop their bodily waste daily. They have a couch, a big soft chair, my bed, and big windows that look out at birds and squirrels. I’m supposed to feel guilty because they’re not out getting torn apart by feral dogs? Riiiiight. Occasional forced cuddles are a far worse fate worse than death. Gotcha. Is PETA always this ridiculous?

  13. Kasia:
Yes, PETA is always this ridiculous.
Did you know that our old friend who shall not be named but who contacted your blog the other day didn’t believe in keeping houseplants for similar reasons?
No I am not kidding. And this was in Kollege, so how many moons ago? (don’t answer that…)
    Yer Seester

I purchased steamer trunks at walmart to put underneat most of my windows so my shiba inus could bark at squirrels.
If the Church taught re-incarnation, I would want to come back as one of my shibas. It ain’t that bad!
