Sinister Secret Societies?

WHO DOESN’T WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THOSE?

PICTURE.

Author: Jimmy Akin

Jimmy was born in Texas, grew up nominally Protestant, but at age 20 experienced a profound conversion to Christ. Planning on becoming a Protestant seminary professor, he started an intensive study of the Bible. But the more he immersed himself in Scripture the more he found to support the Catholic faith, and in 1992 he entered the Catholic Church. His conversion story, "A Triumph and a Tragedy," is published in Surprised by Truth. Besides being an author, Jimmy is the Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers, a contributing editor to Catholic Answers Magazine, and a weekly guest on "Catholic Answers Live."

  1. The Katipunan was Masonic organization founded by Masons, had initiation ceremonies that were copied from masonic rites and had degrees of membership similar to that of Freemasonry.

  2. If my wife sees this, she’ll ask why the KofC isn’t listed :). She gets all pissy when I tell her our meetings are secret.

  3. Real-life secret societies? You mean like Majestic 12? The Illuminati? Opus “Albino Assassins” Dei? The Cultes des Goules? The Order of Skull and Bones? The Patriots? The Central Anarchist Council? Ninjas? Seele? KAOS? The Loyal Brotherhood of the Lazy-Eye-in-the-Sky? To think that there are actually such orders as these that exist in the real world . . .
You see, now I can prove to everyone that I haven’t been a crazy wacked-out paranoid nut my whole life. Thanks Mr. Akin! (I knew that the Freemasons were real! And that they were covering up the existence of the smurfs!)

  4. Randolph,
I recently have been into old time radio. In “The Lone Ranger”, our masked Hero is battling against a secret society called The Black Arrow. Add that to your list with KAOS :).

  5. Request for Jimmy, Warning for others:
Don’t link to the FORBES site, or ay least tell us that you have done so (so we can skip it). FORBES is the most ad-ladden, obnoxious, in your face site I have ever seen. Constantly.

See if your council can start a women’s auxiliary. My council did and once the women started pressuring her to join, my wife had no more interest in coming to K of C stuff. Of course, if she does want to join she’ll have her own business meeting to go to.
But on a serious note companies don’t hold public meetings either, that doesn’t make them secret. I don’t know what happens in your council, but if she went to one of my business meetings she’d learn that they’re secret to save her from the monotony of balancing the checkbooks, making schedules, and all the other stuff that any organization has to take care of. Usually all the other Knights activities are open to their families and anyone else who wants to participate.

  7. Have respect for Opus Dei. Nothing secret about trying to achieve holiness in our lives.
What other outlandish rumors do you also believe?

  8. I have plenty of respect for Opus Dei. My comment was not poking fun at Opus Dei, but rather at Dan Brown’s idiotic novel, “Teh DiVincTard Load,” or whatever idiotic name he gave to it. Especially the part about the Opus Dei keeping albino assassins around to off any one about to uncover their “secrets”. I’ve heard some stupid things in my time, but that just about takes the cake (and the ice-cream, too).

  9. Randolph Carter: You realize what’s going to happen once Google indexes your first post, right?
    Rob in Maine:
She gets all pissy when I tell her our meetings are secret.
You weren’t supposed to say that. You will be paid a visit tonight.
everyone: I was never here. I do not exist.. continue on with your normal business..

  10. Aren’t real secret orders, well, secret?
IF I belonged to a secret order planning world dominion I certainly wouldn’t tell YOU.

  11. Interesting how the Bilderberg Society is not on the list – it’s gotta be a conspiracy!!

  12. Speaking of secret societies, is the ‘Skull and Bones’ secret society featured in the movie The Good Shepherd the same as the one in The Skulls?
I mean, I wonder if there really is such an elitist secret society from which various leaders of our world spring forth thus controlling (and wielding) such dominant power and wealth.

  13. Uh-oh, DJ, Esau suspects. I think we should proceed with Plan Alfa-Two-Xray.
(The rest of you did not see this).
    (Really)

  14. I mean, I wonder if there really is such an elitist secret society from which various leaders of our world spring forth thus controlling (and wielding) such dominant power and wealth.
Sure there is, Jack Chick has proof that the Catholic Church is behind all of it.

  15. The same issue of Forbes has an aticle called The Power of Parishioners
    http://www.forbes.com/free_forbes/2007/0507/210.html?partner=links
While not exacly a “secret society” it surely is one to contend with! So the question we all need to answer is how powerful (or “secret”) is our very own parish?
Ouch!! = Watch out for those “known to members only” handshakes, head slaps, back flips, liturgical music quizzes, encyclical titles, and Latin phrases…..our deacon has a million of them – some days it takes us 20 minutes just to get into the parking lot. Deacon Will (as in God’s Will) claims it puts us in a better frame of mind for prayer….

  16. Wow, I am surprised Forbes didn’t list the Stonecutters on this list. Seriously, here is a list of their accomplishments:
    Who controls the British crown?
Who keeps the metric system down?
    We do! We do!
Who leaves Atlantis off the maps?
Who keeps the martians under wraps?
    We do! We do!
Who holds back the electric car?
Who makes Steve Guttenberg a star?
    We do! We do!
Who robs the cave fish of their sight?
    Who rigs every Oscars night?
    We do! We do!
It could be that since they reorganized not too long ago as the “ancient, mystic society of No Homers,” that they have lost some of their clout.

  17. I mean, I wonder if there really is such an elitist secret society from which various leaders of our world spring forth thus controlling (and wielding) such dominant power and wealth.
Yes, those two movies are about the same secret society, and Skull and Bones does truly exist. The current president Bush is a member and so is his father.
What I find more curious is that the author asserted that the Illuminati are a fable. The historical Illuminati, at least, were a very real organization begun by Adam Weishaupt; discovered and suppressed in Bavaria; and which played a significant role in the French revolution. That much is undeniable. It would have made more sense for the author to assert that they no longer exist.

  18. These articles mock the truth to some extent.
Then it discredits any truth behind those societies. Look if it isn’t Catholic, then it is an organ or an agent of the Devil.
    Pure and simple.
And many saints talked about them, encyclicals written and so on. There has to be something that does the work of the Devil, and random things are not enough to cause the current state of the world. It has to be organized.

  19. Whay isn’t the crew of the Caine listed? They were all disloyal. They were all in on it.

  20. There are now and have never been diabolic plans to attack Christ’s Church. That’s just crazy talk.
Yeah, I can see how obviously true that statement is from the ‘non-existent’ attacks the Church faces from various individuals/groups even in our days.
Also, there’s no such thing as anti-catholicism as well. That’s also crazy talk.

  21. I’d hesitate to paint all secret societies that aren’t a part of the Church as the work of the devil. I mean, if I started a secret club with a couple of friends where we rated Dorito flavors, that would hardly be evil, I think.
Kind of depends more on your works than a simple equation of:
    secret+not(church)<=>evil
I mean, many opposed to the Church accuse us with: secret<=>evil
