Sin & Baptism; Taxes & Abortion; Mary & Communion; Dungeons & Dragons

What happens if you forgot to repent of a sin before baptism? Will you still be forgiven? How can you fix the situation?

Is it okay to pay taxes knowing that the government will use some of the money to support Planned Parenthood and abortion?

Did the Virgin Mary ever receive Communion? If not, why not? If yes, why did she need to?

Is it okay to play Dungeons & Dragons? How about other role-playing games (RPGs)? What are we to make of them?

These are among the questions we explore in this week's episode of the Jimmy Akin Podcast!

Author: Jimmy Akin

Jimmy was born in Texas, grew up nominally Protestant, but at age 20 experienced a profound conversion to Christ. Planning on becoming a Protestant seminary professor, he started an intensive study of the Bible. But the more he immersed himself in Scripture the more he found to support the Catholic faith, and in 1992 he entered the Catholic Church. His conversion story, "A Triumph and a Tragedy," is published in Surprised by Truth. Besides being an author, Jimmy is the Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers, a contributing editor to Catholic Answers Magazine, and a weekly guest on "Catholic Answers Live."

  1. Thank you, Jimmy! An excellent podcast, and one that touched questions of great personal importance to me.
I only wish there was some way of obtaining a transcript, so I could refer to bits of it without having to fish around for the right bit of the MP3.
Come to think of it, just putting time-stamps on your show notes would probably suffice. Something like: * 07:30

  2. Howdy, Tom!
I’d love to provide transcripts of the podcasts, and I’m thinking about ways to allow that to pay for itself.
I also appreciate your suggestion about timestamps. Thanks for the idea!
    Jimmy

  3. CCC 2413 Games of chance (card games, etc.) or wagers are not in themselves contrary to justice. They become morally unacceptable when they deprive someone of what is necessary to provide for his needs and those of others. The passion for gambling risks becoming an enslavement. Unfair wagers and cheating at games constitute grave matter, unless the damage inflicted is so slight that the one who suffers it cannot reasonably consider it significant.

  4. Jimmy,
I knew you would solve my problem, but your explanation was more than I expected! Very logical, and very understandable. Thank you so much.

  5. Jimmy,
Well met and a fine answer! I appeciate you taking the time to consider it and then answer it on your podcast. You, sir are a gentleman and a scholar, as my father might say. The answer truly lies with the individual game master as I have always felt despite the external appearances of the person or even of the material that has been released since 1974 in the days of Gygax and Arneson. Thank you for providing a Catholic perspective on the matter or in other words, a perspective based on common sense. I was impressed to learn that you had actually written for Chaosium in the past. That was a delight to hear.
If you ever find yourself in the Dallas area, you will always have a seat at my gaming table.
    God bless!
